Is it legal to have a black license plate now? like they had them back in the 50's and 60's?

If so where can u purchase them?

You don't get to pick the colors. You can only buy what your state offers.

Typically there is a "standard" plate. There may be other specialty plates. For example, some states offer plates with college sports logos (from state colleges) on them, and your extra fee for personalized plates gets donated to the college, etc. It's kind of a "show your school spirit" kind of thing. Some states offer special plates to (ex) soldiers who have received the purple heart, etc. My point is, these specialty plates may well have different colors than the standard ones.

Having said all that, the federal government passed some requirements a few years back that basically were designed to increase readability. State patrolmen from various states were polled about which license plates were easy to read and which ones were hard to read from a distance. Tests were done to confirm the results. The study conculded that dark lettering on light backgrounds were much easier to read, and the new regulation mandated that. Therefore, you will not find any plates with black backgrounds anymore.
