How many dental molds need to be taken before a palatal expander is made?
My daughter attended the dentist three weeks ago, and had molds taken of both the upper and lower portions of her mouth. She also had spacers put in on her back teeth to make space for the expander. It was indicated at the time that the molds were so that the device could be made to the shape of her mouth. We returned today expecting the expander to be inserted, and instead the dentist made another mold of her upper teeth and put in two new spacers. He said that it his way of being sure, as the spacers shift her teeth and he needed the new mold for the device to be made. I don't understand the point of the first molds being made. I am concerned that this was a cash grab as I am now paying for the same thing twice. Does anyone know if this is normal, or if they went through the same thing.
this is normal. what the dentist said is correct. also, they always take impressions so they can figure out the whole orthodontic plan by looking at the model of her mouth (the the first mold is the "before" and she will have more impressions later on during/after treatment, too).
